This year, the Synchronized Swimming Team of Ladies’ College celebrates the season in a truly unique and magical way.

November 30, 2011 (TCS) – How would you celebrate Christmas? Going carolling, cooking up a storm or indulging in some serious shopping. The Synchronized Swimming Team of Ladies’ College is doing it differently. They’re ringing in the festive season with a water ballet titled ‘So, this is Christmas’ to be performed on the 2nd and 3rd of December at the school pool.

To the tune of several seasonal favourites spanning across many genres, the show consists of swimming routines by groups as well as duets and solos. Performances by the Ladies’ College choir, a pop group and dance troupe, all students of the school, will also colour the event. Ranging from classics like ‘Silent Night’ and ‘White Christmas’ to modern favourites like ‘Santa Baby’ and ‘All I Want for Christmas is You’, the line-up will surely give you the ‘warm and fuzzy’ Christmas feeling from head to toe.

Coach Sonali Ratwatte has been guiding the swimmers through this production. The routines are choreographed by her and the students too are allowed to be creative and their input is valued. Sonali’s a perfectionist; this shows in the extensive attention to detail in everything, from the smallest movement in the water to the last sequin on a costume.

The team consists of students from the ages of 9 to 19, each who have been practicing for this show with dedication and passion for what they’re doing. “What’s important is that, while putting so much work and focus into the routines, the girls are having the time of their lives. They’re enjoying the routines and each other’s company and that shows in their performances” said captain Dharitri Amarasekara.

“Most people look at water ballet and assume it to be ‘easy’” said senior swimmer and past captain Swasha Fernando. “They fail to see just how complicated it can be and all the tough training that goes into it. We want them to appreciate the work that’s put into every performance as well as giving them something a little special to brighten the season”.

Tickets have sold out at an amazing rate and the small amount remaining will be sold at the Ladies’ College office and at the gate.

‘ So, this is Christmas ‘ will be performed on the 2nd and 3rd of December at the Ladies’ College pool at 7.00 pm. Join them for a special kind of Christmas magic!
