A Drink That Hides Its Punch!
2008-09-3010:57
Now here's a cocktail that's not so well known amongst Colombo's pub goers. And surprisingly so!
The Snakebite - a fairly interesting beer cocktail - is only now starting to gain popularity in this part of the world. Its slow rise to fame has been largely due to the fact that so few pubs and clubs know what it actually is.... and those that do are fairly reluctant to serve it.
Why? Mostly because this is one of those drinks that you don't expect to be very potent... which makes people drink more of it... until... WHAM!!! And the next day you wake up in your best mate's bed sporting a black eye, and/or other signs of bodily harm.

The thing is, you just can't see the hit coming.... and this makes it all the more dangerous - hence the very appropriate name. The Snakebite hits you at the most unexpected moment, and you simply just don't recover any time soon!

Since it's mostly a beer based drink, this is one cocktail that even the most self conscious man will be happy to order. There's simply nothing fruity, pink or girly about the Snakebite. It's served in a pint glass and will probably be considered a meal in itself by the ladies.

But let me assure you - this is one drink that's worth the calorie count. An imaginative combination of two of my personal favourite alcohols, the Snakebite has the punch of a strong drink, with the taste of a much lighter, sweeter cocktail.

Originally intended to be a mixture of cider and lager, many variations have evolved, combining the traditional ingredients with many new and exciting flavours which give the Snakebite an interesting twist. The most popular combination to date mixes the lager and cider with a shot of blackcurrant cordial.

Often called Purple, this is definitely a sweeter version of the original, and is perfect for those that find the beer/cider combination a little too heavy for their tastes. But many others have experimented with the Snakebite, to come up with their own personal mixes… and frankly, I am quite curious as to who thought to improve the Snake bite with Jack Daniel’s and Coke! Shudder

And THEN… then there are the killer variations that not only go straight to your head, but also to your liver and probably your heart too! Imagine taking this already strong and heavy beer cocktail, and tossing in a shot of vodka, or gin. Ladies and Gentlemen... do not try this at home!

But, on the other hand, that's probably the best place to have something that will undoubtedly kick you in the head twice over and then some! My recommendation? Try it, but ensure that your bed is really close by to break your fall when you faint. Oh... and don't forget to get your insides examined by a doctor when you regain consciousness!

But if you are feeling particularly posh or just want to go all out, treat your taste buds to this intriguing combination – The Champagne Snakebite. What is it? It really is as simple as it sounds... Take a Snakebite, toss in some champagne and then some blackcurrant. That’s all there is to it really.

Now like I mentioned before, the Snakebite is only just starting to gain popularity in and around Colombo. So you may not find this drink everywhere. And even rarer to find are the variations. But thankfully, Inn on the Green does a good version of the drink, and should put you out around Rs . 800 or so for one.

Enjoy now!! And for god’s sakes…Drink in moderation!
