Go Nuts with Donuts!
By Dinasha Alles

As chandler from friends not-so-eloquently exclaimed, Donuts! - Round fooood for every mooood! And Mr. Bing had it right!
That’s exactly how I would choose to describe the selection of goodies at Gonuts Donuts.

If you’re down in the dumps and feeling a little under the weather I dare you to bite into a Chocolate surprise and not feel better instantly! Just wait till that deep dark chocolate cream touches your lips.

If your day’s been crazy and your in need of a little TLC the strawberries and cream should melt away your cares in seconds, and if your in the mood to simply celebrate life and spread some joy then reach for a choconut!

What stood out most to me about Gonuts Donuts apart from the taste and presentation was the pricing. You wouldn’t think a Donut that looked and tasted as good at these would cost so little. And I’ve got to give props to the team that came up with the design for the adorable presentation boxes and take out packs .

I love that you can walk into one of the many café’s around town and get a couple of Donuts to go and carry them out with you in these tiny colourful boxed purses, with their own lil handles, I would definitely consider carrying one of these to my next dinner party, to hell with Gucci and Guess!!

“Gonuts with Donuts” is the very first Donut Café to open in Sri Lanka. The first shop was launched on the March 2, 2009 at the ODEL food court in Colombo 7. The fully glass fronted shop right at the entrance has a unique style of its own, with its own contemporary styled seating area in the air-conditioned café, futuristic lighting, trendy café music and a fun ambiance, ideal for relaxing and having a donut or two. The café also offers a great selection of coffee, cappuccino, espresso, hot chocolate and a variety of teas to go with the donuts.

If I had to choose my personal favourite, it would have to be the chocolate surprise, a soft donut with a light dusting of choc powder on top, well technically I guess this one wouldn’t really qualify as a donut since it doesn’t have the trademark hollow circle in the middle so I guess its really a soft dough bun, and let me tell you the name chocolate surprise suits this bun perfectly, because you’d never expect a bun as innocent looking as this one to pack such a punch.

Eating IS believing when it comes to this donut, because inside the bun awaits chocolate heaven! Rich thick dark chocolate cream which melts in your mouth and warms the heart. Its definitely the best, and if I had to pick a second favourite I guess it would be the Choconut, an éclair of sorts this donut has a rich chocolate coating on the top and cream chocolate filling inside, oh and the best part is that its got heavenly pieces of cashew nut sprinkled atop.

Home deliveries are available in packs of 6 or 9 Donuts and they cost Rs.475 and Rs.655 respectively. Outlets are located at Alfred House Gardens, Crescat Boulevard, Nugegoda, Nawam Mawathe and HSBC Rajagiriya. In addition to these outlets, the newest member of the chain has now opened in Mount Lavinia and hold on to your seats people cos this one’s got a drive thru!

So you don’t even have to haul your behind out of your vehicle to grab your fav treat. Just drive on by and… wait, you know what a drive thru is!

If you’re a fan of the big Donut chains like Krispy Kreme and Dunkin Donuts then your bound to “go nuts” over these crisp and light donuts with their delectable toppings which have been created by Lalin Jinasena, the founder of Gonuts, and his team of expert pastry chefs.

Some of the irresistible flavors include Strawberries and Cream, cappuccino cream, a heart shaped pink donut, jam filled Berliners with raspberry, another with chocolate, sweet cinnamon donuts, glazed donuts, the yummy strawberry burst with strawberry jam, the tempting chocolate profiterole donut with a vanilla custard filling, the ever popular Chocolate donut, the crunchy Butterscotch and cookies followed by a new Lemon flavored donut.

Stepping out of the box Gonuts have recently launched their new savory range of Donuts. And although I did not try any of em they do sound interesting if you can wrap your mind ‘around’ the concept. Pun intended! The savory range includes flavors like Garlic Bread, Spicy Tuna and a chicken & cheese filings.

Gonuts is part of L. M. Jinasena & Co., (Pvt) Ltd., a group of companies belonging to designer and hotelier Lalin Michael Jinasena. Other well known products under the LMJ umbrella is the Casa Colombo boutique hotel which has been hailed as one of the leading new hotels in the world in 2008 by Conde Nast Traveler magazine.

Lalin hopes to add many more delicious flavors to his menu of donuts, and to expand his Gonuts cafes to more locations around Colombo, other parts of Sri Lanka and overseas in the future making his products more widely available to his customers.

So if you are in the mood to go nuts with donuts then pick up a phone and dial 0114 951515 and have these little round pieces of heaven delivered right to your door!
