Once Upon a Time in Nazi Occupied France : Tarantino at His Best
By Peter Moses
2009-11-2714:22
Once again we get the rare opportunity to venture into the unique mind of Quentin Tarantino in what is dubbed as one of the best movies this year.
In this period piece set “once upon a time in Nazi occupied France” we get to see war through the eyes of Tarantino, and it doesn’t get any better than that.
The first thing you would notice is that the title is misspelt (if u didn’t notice don’t feel too bad) it’s actually not a mistake, when asked why he did it Tarantino said “Here's the thing. I'm never going to explain that. You do an artistic flourish like that, and to explain it would just take the piss out of it and invalidate the whole stroke in the first place”.

Tarantino had started writing this movie well before Kill Bill (2003) but since he couldn’t decide on a good ending he put it on hold and focused on a few other projects. So actually this script has been more than half a decade in the making.

The movie chronicles two separate attempts to kill Hitler firstly by a group of Jewish Americans soldiers known to their enemies as “The Basterds” mainly due to their reputation for terrorizing, killing and dismembering Nazi soldiers with the sole intention of striking fear into the hearts of the Germans and also Shosanna (Mélanie Laurent) the sole survivor of a Jewish Family killed by the Germans.

The Basterds are headed by Lt Aldo Raine (played to perfection by Brad Pitt) who leads his crew demanding 100 German scalps off each of the 12 soldiers. And so they run their campaign of terror in true Tarantino style, a style that many have learned to love over the years. The intensity of these scenes however resulted in the movie being rated “R” but a Tarantino movie is never for the faint of heart anyway.

Shosanna on the other hand, after fleeing to Paris is now the owner and operator of a successful cinema. She plots her revenge when she is informed that top ranking German officials and Herr Hitler himself will be at her cinema to witness the premier of a propaganda movie titled “Nations Pride”.

Both paths cross and after a series of twists and turns and eventually ends in an explosive climax that would blow your mind.

With a well crafted script along with a lot of interesting sub plots and a twist on history itself this movie turns out to be a master piece. If you are a true movie lover, you have no excuse to miss this one.
