Comes and Goes: Here to Stay

Canadian rockers Default are back with a brand new album and this time it’s a keeper.
Although not very popular in this part of the world, these guys are huge in the North American Continent.
They started back in 1999 and have released some awesome tracks in the past to soothe the avid alternative rock fan’s hunger. Their first commercial success came with the singles “Wasting my time” and “Deny”. Since then these guys have snowballed into something of real substance. Their music has improved, their musical themes have varied and their professionalism has increased. Most notably their sound has become more mainstream catering to a variety of audiences, which has brought them tremendous success in Canada and all around the world.Default are best known for their singles “Deny”, “It only hurts” and “The memory will never die”. The band was discovered by Chad Kroeger, front man of Nickelback and they haven’t looked back since then. The new album is titled “Comes and Goes”, but I thinkthis album has nowhere to go but up in sales and popularity. I may be biased due to my preference for their genre of music but it’s a pretty good album on the whole.
“Comes and Goes” is their fourth album, following the success of “One Thing Remains” which was released back in 2005. Comparatively, the new record has some potential in it although it’s still too early to tell. “Comes and Goes” was released in September 2009 in Canada and has not yet been released worldwide. A release date has not been decided but rumours point to an early July release. The delay maybe due to their extensive touring in the US/Canada as well as overseas. Apparently, they’ve even been to war grounds of Iraq and Afghanistan to entertain the troops, so kudos to Default. Fortunately, I managed to get my hands on a copy of the album due to some very generous friends, and gave it a listen. If you’re a fan of their music, it’s a definite must have.

The music has not changed a great deal but it’s sufficient to notice. Their sound is very distinctive and characteristic. Ever since their breakout hit “Deny”, these guys have continued to impress.Their style of music has not changed entirely which is good because they’ve stuck to that which works for them without tinkering too much.

That’s not to say there’s no variety, there is definitely some variety. It contains something for all of us. The album starts off with some fast tracks that definitely rock. “Turn it on”, “All over me” and “Fascination” will definitely have you banging your head. Then you’ve got the more rock-ballad type songs. Tracks like “Little too late”, “Hold on to you” and “Yesterday’s song” cater to the young-adult crowd that favour the more mainstream rock and roll sound. There’s nothing remarkable about their music, but they are good to listen to. Guitar riffs are nothing extraordinary, although they are pretty catchy. The tunes will play in your head for a while after you’ve heard the songs. They also make good use of the piano to drive a couple of tracks in the album. This variety is what makes this a better album than the previous three.

Another thing to note is their similarity to Nickelback and Theory of a Deadman. Of course all three are Canadian bands but their styles of music are pretty similar which is a bit of a letdown. From their musical themes to the format of their songs, they strike a strong resemblance to each other. Chad Kroeger is the common denominator for all three bands (TOAD was discovered by Kroeger as well) and I guess his influence is what brings about this similarity.Default’s music has also been used in Pop culture in the recent past.

Their hit single "Deny" was featured in the video and computer game NHL 2003 by EA Sports. Their song "The Memory Will Never Die" was used as a secondary theme song for WWE'sWrestleMania 23. They also contributed an original song called "Blind" to Music from and Inspired by Spider-Man.

The album contains 11 tracks and runs for approximately 43 minutes. It’s a really good listen as it contains music for all types of listeners. If you are lucky enough to get a copy of the album, I suggest you listen to it a couple of times before judging it because it doesn’t strike you hard the first time around. Its one of those albums that grow on you the more you listen to it. First time you listen to it, you’ll probably pick out 2, maybe 3, tracks that you like. Give it some time and I assure you you’ll be hooked on Default.
