The Two Best Teams Lock Horns
2010-07-2114:25
The all important finals of the President’s trophy is finally here and it will be league champs St.Peters and league third place and Bradby winners Royal College.
These two teams have displayed the best rugby out in the middle and it’s going to be one those contests where the spectators will be very reluctant to choose the winner. The last time these two sides met was in the league and what a close game it was with Petes coming out on top winning the match 22-20.
Petes, after experiencing another fabulous season under the captaincy of Keith Gurusinghe were tagged as the unbeaten champs for this year, but one thing have gone negatively for them and that is the match exposure close to the finals. They did not get a chance to play in the quarter finals as they were given a walk over against Joes and then they had to go through the whole Pathana episode. So they haven’t been spending too much time in the middle playing together as a team. But they have been known to be a very professional outfit coached by one of the greats Sanath Martis and they would want to bag the triple this year already getting the league as well as the seven’s titles under their belt.
The Royalists on the other hand have had a superb second half of the season winning almost all the games. They beat their arch rivals thrice and then completely rattled the Thomians by winning the Gunaratne trophy. The Royal coach is a great tactician and will surely take the game to the strong Petes outfit. Royal have been known to be a bit too predictable in attack with most of their attacks revolving around their number 8 and vice captain Shehan Pathirana. They have some hot talent in Rimze Jamaldeen who is the talk of the town after his two splendid tries in the second leg of the Bradby.
The Peterites by far have the best line in the schools arena and will take turns in running into the brick wall like defense of Royal. It will once again be an interesting battle up front with Royal College having the slight edge in their forwards having the deadly three at the back row. Shehan Pathirana, Shehan Dasanayake and also the live wire Chilanka Samaraweera who has been a find for the Reid Avenue side. The line outs will mostly be even Stephens with the likes of Shehan Pathirana and Chilanka doing the jumping for the Royal team and Shenal Dias and Suhiru Anthony doing the jumping for the Petes.
Royal have been taking a while to settle in and that would be an area of concern for Coach Theo Serafim who will look to add some variations to the attack and create some inroads early on. Petes will once again go in as favorites to this game and will try to get the tag of being invincible this season. Royal will have their work cut out and will try to make an upset to end their fabulous season with a bang.
